Scammers Snag Money on Net Phones
Using caller ID spoofing, electronic grifters can take not only your identity, but they can also transfer your money directly out of an account. The low security level in voice over internet protocol, or VOIP, makes it possible.

The Music Goes on Side A and the Flip Side Is a DVD
The major labels are introducing DualDisc, a CD-size format that contains music content on one side and DVD content on the other and, more importantly, that can’t be pirated.
[Via New York Times: Technology] "So far, Sony BMG has been the most aggressive of the major labels in involving marquee artists and promoting the format, according to several retailers. Since the DualDisc incorporates formats that already exist, it will have an advantage over other recent products, such as Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio, and retailers believe DualDisc will capture more of a market. Of the four major labels, only EMI Music has not yet announced DualDisc releases but it is expected to do so this year." Apart from the pull-quote above I see nothing in the article about copy protection. Interesting that Sony BMG are pushing Dual-Disc so hard, particularly since it's Sony who introduced SACD.

Edirol ships R-4 recorder with BWF format support
Edirol Corp. on Friday announced that its R-4 recorder, which was first introduced last October, is now shipping. The company has added support for Broadcast Wave Format (BWF), which enables the R-4 to write the metadata required to comply with that standard. BWF files can be used in any playback device or audio editor that is compatible with the WAV format. The R-4 features a 40GB hard drive and USB 2.0 connectivity, with the ability to hold up to 17 hours of material at 24-bit/96kHz quality or up to 58 hours at 16-bit/44.1kHz, which is comparable to a CD.

Feature: Take Control of Making Music with GarageBand
With GarageBand 2, you can create exciting songs quickly and easily using the music loops that come with Apple's music-creation program--even if you know nothing at all about writing music. In this excerpt, we'll cover the process of putting together and editing a song as well as working with a loop. The ditty we'll create throughout article may be simple, but it will cover a lot of territory about GarageBand.

AFP sues Google for copyright infringement
In what I expect will prove the most significant test case since Tasini vs. New York Times (in which the U.S. Supreme Court found the Times liable for damages to writers -- which it still has yet to pay, more than three years later -- for systematic electronic plagiarism of articles to which it had purchased only print rights) of rights to electronic distribution of written text, and possibly the most important case to date on the limits of permissible Internet archiving, excerpting, and redistribution without the consent of copyright owners, Agence France-Press (AFP) has filed suit against Google for the inclusion of AFP news headlines, leads, and photo thumbnails in the Google News Web site -- a site that might more accurately be titled "News Stolen by Google" than "Google News".

“Everyone knows that Apple’s iPod is a terrific music player,” writes Walt Mossberg for the Wall Street Journal. “But what you might not know is that it’s much more than just a high-tech Walkman.
