Gary Barnett ? knucklehead ! This guy has had it coming since he weaseled his way out of Northwestern. EZ hits it on the head with this from EZN::
GOOFUS AND GALLANT, COLORADO-STYLE
The statement:
"She was awful! Katie was a girl. And not only was she a girl, she was terrible, OK? And there's no other way to say it."... Colorado football coach Gary Barnett, responding to the allegation by kicker Katie Hnida that she had been raped by a fellow player when she was on the team in 1999.
The right way to apologize:
I spoke out of frustration at the accumulation of these recent allegations of sexual misconduct related to our football program, and I recognize now that Ms. Hnida's level of talent was both a wholly inappropriate thing for me to comment on under the circumstances and completely irrelevant to whether her very serious charges are true or not. I apologize to her and to her family for pain my remarks caused them.
The wrong way to apologize:
I sincerely regret that yesterday a portion of my remarks were either misinterpreted or aired out of context and I apologize for answering that question in a matter where I must have come across as insensitive.
I don't have to tell you which approach Barnett chose yesterday, setting what looks like a new standard for grudging, insincere apologies.
Readers of this page dubbed such apologies "weasologies," but perhaps a better name for them now would be "barnetts."
Those of us from the Chicago area aren't surprised.
We knew Barnett was a weasel in January of 1999 when, less than three years after signing a 12-year contract with Northwestern and swearing his life-long allegiance to the university's football program, he left to take the Colorado job.
