Fred Kaplan of Slate.com approves of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s plan to bridge the divide between the US and UK and the France and German positions on Iraq. Already Mexico and Chile, both temporary members of the UN Security Council have expressed interest in the plan, which calls for continued inspections until a final deadline with March 28 being proposed. Iraq would have to prove that weapons of mass destruction were destroyed – rather than the UN weapons inspectors trying to find weapons and catch Iraq in a lie. The compromises in this plan could France and Russia not to use their UN vetoes. In any case given the continued Turkish stalling on basing troops in Turkey, its unlikely a US force would be ready there to take part in an invasion until April so no time would be lost. 4:43:27 PM ![]() |
