Science Fiction editor, Patrick Nielsen Hayden hosts an interesting discussion of US President George W. Bush space plans announcement on his Electolite blog. Hayden believes the announcement was simply political posturing as not enough money is being pledged to allow NASA to do anything useful.

In the related comments a space expert describes why NASA is abandoning the next scheduled maintenance mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, thereby allowing it to expire prematurely and his cheap three-year plan to use Russian technology to get to the moon.

Any Russian tycoons want to back the plan? It’s more expensive then buying an English football club but could give their name more publicity around the world.
