WalMart ships Lindows PCs. Remember WalMart was shipping dirt-cheap PCs without OSes included (presumably so that you could install Linux on them; or, if you believe MSFT, so that you could install unlicensed copies of Windows on 'em)? Now they're shipping dirt-cheap PCs with Lindows installed, Lindows being a GNU/Linux-based OS that feels like Windows runs many Windows apps under Linux. Link Discuss (via /.) [Boing Boing Blog]

The .NET Show: Object Role Modeling.

The .NET Show: Object Role Modeling

The latest installment in the .NET Show was put up last night. The focus of this episode is Object Role Modeling. Here's a quick definition of ORM for those who aren't already familiar with it:

Object Role Modeling (ORM) is a powerful method for designing and querying database models at the conceptual level, where the application is described in terms easily understood by non-technical users. In practice, ORM data models often capture more business rules, and are easier to validate and evolve than data models in other approaches.

What I like about Radio

I think the thing I like the most about Radio over other blog environments is a sense of community. I first started with blogger. Blogger is a fine product but there is no community, just lots of bloggers. Blogger decides which few blogs they think are cool (and they usually are) and posts them, meanwhile new posts occur constantly and the only way to view them is hit and hope.

Radio has a smaller community. It seems more developer based and since that is what I am, it is natural that I would be drawn to it. I think most of feel we are kind of in the back of the room listening, kind of like the guys in the back of the classroom. The downside of this is that if I had something interesting to say, I really don't know how to get someone to hear it.

More info on the weblog outliner. In this post I explain how attributes work, and wish we had broad support for a permalink attribute. I'd like to be able to ask a weblog system (Blogger, Movable Type, or Radio) to convert a post ID into an HTTP url, so I don't have to bother the user. It's a complicated mapping for a human mind, not too hard for weblog software. I was able to add the feature to Radio in about five minutes, it's probably a pretty easy addition for everyone. Postscript: Just emailed with Ben Trott. The next version of Movable Type will return a permaLink element of the struct in metaWeblog.getPost. [Scripting News]

WLink: A connection between home weather stations and the Web. WLink v5.2. - WLink is a Mac OS based interface to personal weather stations manufactured by Davis Instruments and Rainwise. It displays current conditions and archival/almanac data recorded by the stations and can transfer the data in HTML/graphic format to an ISP. WLink can act as a CGI to any Mac based web server and is fully customizable on screen or via AppleScript (it's scriptable and recordable). Version changes: Added support for Davis Vantage Pro Rev B. and the remote soil temp/moisture and remote temp/humidity sensors in the archived data. Archive data can now be imported from other files using Applescript. Added ability to manipulate data between windows (cut, copy, paste, drag and drop). Improved the autoloading of backgroound sensor images. [AppleScript Info]

I have been meaning to hook my Davis Instruments weather station to one of our older Macs for uploading the current weather information to the Web site, but I just haven't had the time to play with it yet. Of course, I am not sure I should admit that in addition to my interest in nature, birds, butterflies and the lot, I also keep a weather journal with daily weather records for the last seven years... Some levels of geekiness can be just...scary. [Mac Net Journal]
