The Linux version of Self runs fine under Knoppix. For those not willing to install megabytes of Cygwin/XFree86 for Windows and just want to try it out.

Self on Windows. The Self programming language is a protoype based system developed by Sun. Read all about it and obtain the Windows port from Harald Gliebe's Self page.

Very cool.  Here is interactive look into the "Massive" system used to animate characters in action sequences for the Lord of the Rings.  Much of this will probably end up on the desktop in a couple of years. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

Technically it's already on the desktop since Massive runs on Linux and Windows on standard PC's. When I ported Massive to Windows I was running small simulations on a 3 year old machine with good performance. The latest desktop hardware is much more impressive in what you can do of course.

(Note that I'm not the author of Massive, know little about it technically, and my task was simply to port the code base to Windows. Don't take what I say about the product as being representational of the version in current use or as any indication of future directions of the product).
