A few observations on spaceship sprites:
- Lighting direction should be consistent, of course.
- In addition to the primary (sun) light, a secondary bluish (star) light from a different direction looks nice.
- Caraciatured sprites (aka "SD" or "Super Deformed") look better at small sizes than realistic proportioned ships.
- Watch out for small details like lights or other bright spots and thin lines like gun barrels and antennae that may flicker on and off too much as the sprites rotate

These are some sprites I did for the ill-fated MacSpaceGame, a game project I was actively working on with Robert A. back in 1998. Unfortunately, I bailed out on the project, for various reasons which I might write about later.
