QUOTE OF THE DAY "The Mayor grabbed a tom-tom. He started to smack it. And, all over Who-ville, they whooped up a racket. They rattled tin kettles! They beat on brass pans, On garbage pail tops and old cranberry cans! They blew on bazookas and blasted great toots On clarinets, omm-pahs and boom-pahs and flutes! Finally, at last! From that speck on that clover Their voices were heard! They rang out clear and clean. And the elephant smiled. "Do you see what I mean?... They've proved the ARE persons, no matter how small. And their whole world was saved by the Smallest of All!" - - Dr. Seuss (from "Horton Hears a Who...") RHINO HERE: It's the weekend. Time for more light hearted fare at Rhinos Blog, beginning with "Whalesong". A group of volunteers including my old friend, Daniel Sythe, have set up a microphone in the whale inhabited waters of Maui, Hawaii & when the season hits (which has just begun) they broadcast live; sometimes water lapping & sometimes whalesongs over the internet. Best listening times = 11 PM to 7 AM Hawaii time (1-9 AM PST) http://www.whalesong.net The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) http://www.nrdc.org/ presents the Rolling Stones in concert, Thursday, February 6, 2003, at 8:00 pm at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The FREE event entitled, "Turn Up the Heat on Global Warming" is to raise awareness about global warming & spotlight opportunities that exist right now to start fixing the problem. To enter a sweepstakes to win two free tickets complete the entry form at http://www.nrdcstonesconcert.org. You can also enter by mail (see Rules & Regulations section of the website). No purchase or donation required, but entries are limited to one per person/household/email address. Remember Dr. Seuss, the brilliant artist and children's author of books such as "The Cat In The Hat" & "The Grinch That Stole Christmas". Few are aware that early in his career, he created a series of political cartoons on the relationship between the GOP & the Nazis. As editorial cartoonist for the New York nightly "PM", Dr. Seuss attacked the GOP for their support of Hitler & the fascism of the day & issues such as Jim Crow. Folks at U.C. San Diego have collected & reproduced these cartoons for the sake of historical posterity & possibly as a warning of the dangers of Republican fascism. http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/dspolitic/Frame.htm Once again the women of West Marin County, CA and their organization, "Baring Witness", have spelled the word "PEACE" with their nude bodies, butt... instead of a couple dozen boodies like last time, they had 94 women on the sandy shore of Drake's Beach, near Point Reyes Station. They now plan a massive nude peace march in San Francisco on January 18th. She posts on her "Notables Weblog" and in her satirical White House diary Dubya's Dayly Diary. http://www.madkane.com Since Senator Frist has been on my mind this week, here's a song she wrote in his honor.
