VOIP Time
My phone was disconnected for a few days over the holidays due to a billing snafu, compounded by the fact that I was travelling etc. It gave me an opportunity to figure out how much I could save with VOIP. It turned out that even with .05/minute long distance, I was paying $60-70/mo total for local and long distance. Verizon now has unlimited plans for ~ $45 (w/taxes etc), but I have had too many problems with them in the past, and phone companies in general to consider them. Propping up incumbents is not the way to get better service for less. Comcast has comparable unlimited plans for just under $60 (w/taxes and voicemail), but they have lots of fine print.
I just ordered my Vonage ATA from Amazon (they have a better return policy than ordering from Vonage, according to fatwallet.com) and it should be here in a day or two. I expect to save close to $500/yr over my current plans, and (finally!) get voicemail notification delivered to my email account. I had put this off until number portability was a possibility, but thanks to the FCC I just ran out of excuses.
