Knoppix to the Rescue
I had to get some files off my old e-smith hard drive, formatted as ext2. I no longer had the box it was attached to, so I decided to connect it to my Windows box and fire up Knoppix. I succeeded in getting the Knoppix desktop to come up, and to recognize and mount the ext2 the hard drive, but I had no network access. The knoppix forum suggested that this was a problem with APIC & the BIOS ... not necessarily solvable. So I took a chance and hooked up my firewire hard drive, which still required some work but ... it worked! I had a large mounted read/write partition to transfer my files from ext2 to FAT. Thanks Knoppix.
I've had a couple other occasions to use Knoppix as a system recovery tool, and I think it's just super. I'm thinking about getting a USB keychain drive so that I could use Knoppix as a desktop more frequently, and I've also passed on a copy to a friend interested in migrating to a Linux desktop.
