VOIP vs. MSDN
Coincidentally, my MSDN login arrived the same day as my Vonage MTA. This meant that I got to try out VOIP during about as heavy a download period as I was ever going to have. And it was pretty good. My favorite feature is going to be email notification of voicemail. It will be so great to have a (semi)unified inbox when travelling.
Example:
From: Outside Caller (16175040556)
Date: Jan 14 2004 06:01:21 PM
To : John Sequeira (16173951241)
You received a new voicemail message. Please check it at your earliest convenience.
They give you the option of attaching a WAV file to the email, so maybe that's why they don't have a direct secure link to download the message.
Vonage tech support folks are heroes
There was a tech support call to get Vonage up and running. Trying to be helpful, I said things like,
"I just received the MTA, put it in my 802.11g router's DMZ... no, no it's behind the router because I want to put it behind an uplinked hub, and I don't yet care about QOS ... yes, I probably don't need the DMZ because my access point has uPNP. I suspect it's not working because of a typo in my MTA's MAC ... "
and it occurred to me that VOIP just might not be ready for prime time.
