Are we still a Small Market?
Interesting article in the NYTimes about how the Seattle Mariners are a financial success that possibly exceeds their amazing success on the field. In addition to the remarkable quote below, there are other fascinating metrics in the linked article, including the fact that the doubled their net from their local cable contract, from 18 to 37Million in the past year.
Remarkably, although the Seattle market is less than one-quarter the size of New York, Mariners games are drawing more households a game than the Mets or Yankees.
That's 355K per game, or 39K per inning. Think about that next time you're watching a game. 40 thousand dollars in advertising an inning -- just to pay for the rights. So they must be charging at least 60/inning to pay their costs and profit. Wow.
My hats off to the owners of the Baseball Club of Seattle, the non-profit institution that bought the Mariners nearly a decade ago.
