When in doubt, call the clerk

One of the more interesting aspects of my job is responding to various inquiries from attorneys, members of the public, prisoners, reporters and others. I'm running an office two hands short, so my share of these inquiries has increased over the past few months. The variety keeps things interesting. Here's a sampler of some of today's inquiries:

  • Do the petitioners have the opportunity to file another brief in an original jurisdiction case after the rule to show cause has issued?
  • When is my petition scheduled for conference?
  • How do I seek a stay of ancillary proceedings while the appeal is pending? When could I have an answer on a stay if filed?
  • Are cases pending with an issue similar to x?
  • How do we proceed to certify a question?
  • What is happening with the attorney claim file disclosure cases? (This is a recent hot issue involving disclosure of attorney-client communications in bad-faith litigation.)
  • Which part of the file is sealed?
  • Where can I obtain a transcript of a hearing on x date?
  • Can we hold a special attorney admission ceremony next week?
  • Can we reserve the courtroom for a public event?
  • You need to correct that opinion!
  • How do I supplement the record?
  • Has the Court issued an opinion about x recently?

All in a good day's work
