Jon Udell summarizes Forrest Sawyer summarizing the history of human communication

the story of stories retells itself endlessly

or, "The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, rewrites"

Storytelling, rich media, and web services. MSNBC's Forrest Sawyer kicked off InfoWorld's NextGen conference with a sweeping survey of evolutionary, cultural, and technological history in the manner of James Burke. Speaking as a communicator, not a technologist, Sawyer recounted the many ways in which technologists have missed the point: communication is not a problem to be solved, it's what makes us human, and the most essential human act is telling a story. ... Social Network Visualization rides again

Alex Wright (whose weblog I can't figure out how to subscribe to) points to some recent discussion on social networks and several weblogs I'll have to get back to.

8.23.2002
social networks - believing the hype
There's been no shortage of high-minded blather lately about social networks as being the new new thing in the software world. Rick Rashid talked about Microsoft's vision for a
futuristic social operating system at ETCON; Peter Morville, Peter Merholz, Howard Rheingold and other smart folks have also been writing along these lines lately. All this grand theorizing is, of course, running at least several paces ahead of reality, but I've been pleasantly surprised to discover a few actual, working examples of real software projects out there that seem to validate at least some of the hype.

Which stimulates me to collect pointers to my own experiments on social nework visualization.

Macroscope Manifesto (not just social networks, but the the most substantive piece of work).

Spb Full Screen Keyboard

Spb Full Screen Keyboard is a unique text input software for Pocket PC. Unlike other input methods it covers entire screen area and has keys that are large enough to be typed with finger-tips, not with a stylus. It is very handy for entering large amounts of text - as you type, the text is being entered into an edit box where it can be selected, deleted or modified. Spb Full Screen Keyboard also features a close interaction with other Pocket PC programs. It runs as an input method in Soft Input Panel (SIP), Pocket PC native technique for entering text. It is also very easy to modify existing text with it - all you have to do is select a part of text in any Pocket PC application and call Full Screen Keyboard - it will appear with selected text being already in its edit box.
