Why US Kids Aren't Jumping On Wireless Messaging. An interesting article from Slate suggests some of the reasons why kids in the US have been much slower to jump on the wireless messaging bandwagon. The biggest reason is that most kids have their own computer and internet access at home. They sit around and instant message each other from home, so there's less of a need to do so via their mobile phone. On top of that, there's the public transportation issue. In Japan, especially, kids spend much more of their day on public transportation, which they waste away by text messaging on their mobile phones. In the US, kids are more likely to be in a car, perhaps with friends, and less likely to need to kill that time. [Techdirt Corporate Intelligence: Techdirt Wireless News]

More Cities Set Up Wireless Networks. The NY Times is reporting on the trend of more and more cities to offer free Wi-Fi networks covering their downtown areas. They see it as a form of urban renewal. It's a way to attract businesses and business people to make use of their down town areas. It makes so much sense, I'm surprised that more cities haven't already jumped on the bandwagon. Think of it this way: it costs the towns a few thousand a year, but guarantees that many people (think of just the "working lunch" crowd) will frequent their downtown areas. I wonder how all of the commercial hotspot providers will survive. [Techdirt Corporate Intelligence: Techdirt Wireless News]

Wi-Fi Money Makers. Who will make money from Wi-Fi in 2003? It won't be carriers or WISPs. No has yet to show that selling Wi-Fi service on it's own can make money. Carriers will offer Wi-Fi to help build out wireless data networks and up sell customers to more widely available, albeit more expensive and slower, 3G services. The real winners will be Wi-Fi equipment makers who will win contracts from the carriers to help them build out the networks. [Techdirt Corporate Intelligence: Techdirt Wireless News]

The disruptive Web. If you're creating a Web service that you hope will have a disruptive impact, the lessons are clear. Support HTTP GET-style URLs. Design them carefully, matching de facto standards where they exist. Keep the URLs short, so people can easily understand, modify, and trade them. Establish a blog reputation. Use the blog network to promote the service and enable users of the service to self-organize. It all adds up to a recipe for recombinant growth. [Full story at InfoWorld.com] ... [Jon's Radio]
