activeRenderer's Release Schedule

I've been asked several times when I would finally release a first version of the activeRenderer tool. I guess this whole thread must be kind of overextending.

The short answer is: as soon as possible, I'm already 2 weeks late on s l a m 's schedule.

The last steps before the release are :

  • Providing version control to the tool's installation routine, to handle updates in the css and javascript external files gracefully.
  • Developing and testing the tool's auto-update feature, with eVector's brand new tool updating service.

So hopefully, the activeRenderer saga will be over sometimes next week.

Instant Ouline Instant Rendering !

This time, it's for real. With Andre's help, I've added a little code to the activeRendererSuite, in the callbacks.fileMenu.save script.

Now every time I save a Radio outline in my instantOutliner folder, or anywhere below the gems folder, an additional copy of the outline is saved in the outlines folder, and an HTML rendered copy is upstreamed immediately.

A note to Radio developers: neither Andre nor I could tap into the user.saveWindow callback, which I first tried to use remembering an advice Jake gave me some time ago.

The system.callbacks.saveWindow script does not seem to be called by the Frontier kernel anymore in my 8.0.7 version of MacOS X based Radio.

Releasing Busy Windows Files

At last a little Win32 sysadmin related contents in s l a m.

The file sharing mechanism in Windows NT and Windows 2000 sometimes doesn't close shared open files properly. When this happens, anyone trying to access the file gets a "file busy" error message.

This recently happened for my instant outline on UserLand's new Windows based static server:

Upstream 1 file: The server reported an error: The file "L:\static\xmlStorageSystem\users\0104487\instantOutliner\marcBarrot.opml" is busy.
To release the file in Windows 2000, use the Computer Management console, connect to the server that is publishing the file, expand System Tools and Shared Folders in the console tree, then select Open files. The faulty file should be listed in the right pane. You can close it by right-clicking on it and selecting the Close Open File option, then confirming with Ok.

To release the file in Windows NT4, use the Server Manager, connect to the server that is publishing the file, click the 'In Use' button, then select the faulty file in the list, and click the 'Close Resource' button.

This problem occurs so often that I usually try to keep away from SMB file sharing, but sometimes, there are no other solutions.

Multi-Author Weblogging

UserLand is quietly releasing the first version of a Multi-Author Weblog Tool.

A multi-authored weblog has posts that appear on the home page which are written by a group of people, instead of by a single author.
This is great news, since my next project for s l a m, after outline and code rendering, was to implement precisely this feature.

By the time i'm ready to launch s l a m, the tool will probably be out of beta. How cooler could this get :-)

Are Webloggers Situationists ?

So true:

The 4 hours you as an average citizen spend in front of the television is what keeps the general popualtion shackled to the teet of the beast. You are not relaxing when you watch, you are being fed. And the diet is not healthy.[Adam Curry: The Big Lie]

And not exactly news either. French speakers can take a refresher in Guy Debord's La Société du Spectacle, published in 1967.

More artistically minded Italian speakers can (re)read Giuseppe Pinot-Gallizio's Manifesto Della Pittura Industriale, published in 1959.
