Space is still dangerous....
But travel there become relatively common place enough that we often forget that.... we're still just at the beginning of spaceflight and the machines that get us into space and back are very fragile and complicated.
That doesn't help feeling badly about Columbia and its' crew. Machines are replaceable... people aren't.
We can't turn back the clock on space. It's there and we need to keep going forward into it. But maybe it's time to start investing more money into alternatives like that space elevator.
