The Cable Guys are in town, The Cable Guys are in town....$$$$$$$

In New Orleans this week is Cable 2002, a meeting of Cable TV executives.  One former cable executive, Ray Nagin, was sworn in as the mayor of New Orleans today.  He's the former head of Cox Communications here in New Orleans.  But there are other cable big shots here as well.

As I look out the window of my 40th floor office building, which has a wonderful view of the Mississippi River, I see the 300 foot yacht called Tatoosh, which is owned by Paul Allen of Microsoft and Charter Communications fame.  He supposedly bought it from Craig McCaw for about $100 million in late 2001.  The yacht came with two helicopters, a 40-foot speedboat and a swimming pool. It had been docked here in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, and for Mardi Gras.  Now it's back.  No doubt Allen came in town early for the Jazz Fest and is staying for the Cable convention.  One thing I know for sure: that sucker looks like a commercial cruise ship, or a small battleship.

Well, as Mel Brooks said in History of the World Part 1, "it's good to be King."

More Deep Thoughts on Deep Linking....

"The whole point of the web is that there are multiple doors and multiple paths to pages.  If you don't grasp that, then your web site is sure to fail, and you might as well shut it down now and put your shareholders out of their misery. "  [Corante]

I've noticed that many websites and blogs are advocating a mass-revolt, callig for people to purposefully deep-link to the site of the Dallas Morning News.   The clock is ticking, and I'm sure they've figured out that they have committed a major blunder.  Now I'm sure they're working on a plausible exit strategy.  Many people have figured out that there is a simple non-legal solution to this: just make it so people can't deep link.  Uh, golly gee Wilbur, I never thought of that!

Another Prodigal Lawyer-Blogger Checks In...

Madeleine Kane sent me an E-mail today telling me that she found my site through the MSNBC article that came out on April 15th.  She calls herself recovering lawyer who's switched to humor writing (hey leave a trail of bread crumbs for the rest of us...).  Among other things she writes a satirical weblog about our President-- Dubya's Dayly Diary

Welcome to Madeleine.  I guess it's true what Daniel White said in "The Official Lawyer's Handbook": there are no funny lawyers; only funny people who made the wrong career choice.  Glad she was able to achieve Escape Velocity.

The Matrix Reloads

"The Wachowski brothers are currently in residence at the Fox studios in Sydney, Australia, simultaneously shooting Matrix Reloaded (part two) and Matrix Revolutions (part three). The movies won't come out until 2003 (Reloaded in May, Revolutions in either August or November), but the hype has already begun. This month a trailer for Reloaded hits theaters, and not since the Star Wars movies has a film inspired so much breathless anticipation on the Internet." [Time.com, via [The Shifted Librarian]

I can't wait.  I loved the original movie, which I own on DVD and have watched more than seven times.  I know that Rick is probably more excited than I am.  After all, his weblog is called "tins...." after a key part in the movie where, as Rick puts it, Neo learns that things are not always as they seem.  One bummer: apparently the woman who played the Oracle has died and so she will appear in the second movie (which she had finished filming), but not the third.

Sad News from Holland...

The leading politician in the Dutch elections this year, Pim Fortuyn, was just shot and apparently killed outside the Dutch broadcast corporation's radio studios in Hilversum. Mr. Fortuyn had just finished an interview with two BNN dj's, including my co-host Jeroen Kijk in de Vegte.

I just got off the phone with Jeroen, the trauma heli just left without taking Fortuyn, so it appeas the worst and unthinkable has happened. I see a talking head now on Dutch tv saying he can't believe this is Holland...Unbelievable, this happened right on the guarded grounds of the entire country's broadcast facilities and they can't get a live shot from the scene.

As a reference, because you will be hearing alot about Pim Fortuyn in the coming days. If I was a Dutch citizen, I would have voted for him.

They just announced it on the radio. Pim Fortuyn has passed. Now they're playing Ave Maria. phew. this sucks. Via [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]

"Greed, Greed, Greed"

"Executive greed is so commonplace these days that the protests make no difference. These folks will grab every dollar that isn't nailed down, with the help of their pet-rock compensation committees, and if you're a shareholder you have only one option -- sell."  [Dan Gilmor] via [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]

Dan's article focuses on Silicon Valley companies, but there are a lot of pet rock collections out there....

Law 'Blogs in Texas

Katie (of "Being Katie" fame) is mentioned in a blog piece on the State Bar of Texas site. Katie is quoted about her blog and her plans for it as she embarks on her legal career. And the article also mentions law bloggers from Sugar Land (Stephan Kinsella, an in-house IP specialist) and Dallas (SixDifferentWays) Via [Bag & Baggage]

More law 'bloggers?  Damn!  This is better than the Psychic Friends Network.

The Best Way to Learn is by Doing - so says a Louisiana Law School

LSU Law School is suing one of its students for trademark infringement over a website that he maintains.   The site is called lsulaw.com, and it includes a school calendar, law-related links and comments by Douglas. Dorhauer, some of them critical of the law school.

The lawsuit says Dorhauer is trading on the school's good will and confusing people. It asks that he be prohibited from using the site's name and requests an unspecified amount of money and the law school's legal fees.  In response to the claim that the site is "confusing" law students, Dorhauer replies on his website "If you can't figure out that this is not the official site of a prominent Baton Rouge-area law school," he writes, "then you may do well to take up a career in macramé or pottery — anything but the law, which requires keen analytical skills." [N.Y. Times] [via Buzz]

Can you tell the difference?  Here's one site, and here's the other.  I doubt it matters, though.  My guess is that the similarity between the names will do the student in and common sense issues will not matter.  And he should know that they don't teach common sense in law school anyway...
