Dealing with the devil

Open Letter from Lavi Lev, Cadence Design Systems, Inc. [Linux Weekly News]

"If we all open our databases, the industry will reduce unnecessary costs to the customer and allow the EDA and electronics industries' combined energies to focus on addressing the complexity of chip designs. This will provide significant benefits for both the EDA and electronics industries."

This is something I know I want... strike that, it's something I NEED. I'm currently in the middle of my own EDA interchange hell, with two tools (one of them from Cadence) with well specified formats that just happen to not intersect. Heck, I've had interchange problems between two Cadence tools.

However, there's this little voice telling me that Cadence is an unlikely source of interest in open anything.
