The Mobile Data Association estimates that a record 125 million+ text messages were sent in the UK on New Year's Eve (more than two times the daily average). If the average sms message is about 140 bytes, we think that's 17.5 gigabytes of "happy new year", "where r u?" and "tried to call u".
Unfortunately we can't use that to get a sense of the total capacity of the UK mobile networks because we don't know how many phone calls were being placed/attempts during the same period. And just how many calls were attempted but not successfully placed?
