College Accomodations and Professors' Response

Accomodations for college students with Aspergers is more common in Britain or Australia, compared to the US.  However, rapid changes in the US are being driven by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, even though it was presumably designed to assist students in K-12 grades.  I just attended a meeting at my college with several professors who have a student with autism in their classes.  We discussed several accomodations (including use of hand signals to alert the student that his questions will be answered at a later time, and so on).  At this time in the U.S., it is unclear as to whether these accomodations are mandatory or not, but college administrators and professors are being driven by 1) good will and 2) vague fears of litigation.

The big fear of college professors is that pressures to make accomodations will take up a large amount of time (attending meetings, etc.) which will steal them away from research and other teaching activities.

Personally, I'm sitting on the fence about all this...I want to help students with AS/Autism survive in college, but I, too, need to get my research and class preparation done...all these meetings and communications with staff are taking up several hours of my week.
