Bill Burkett, the (alleged) source of the forgeries, has admitted that he passed information to the DNC. He also admitted that he passed information to the Kerry campaign via his contact with Max Cleland.
Perhaps you believe that Burkett doesn't know Max Cleland and vice versa. Well then how does Burkett magically wind up with Cleland's cell phone number (by Cleland's own admission)?
Burkett, with a history of "nervous breakdowns" just happens to have the cell phone number of the guy who introduced John Kerry at the DNC convention.
The CBS story:
"More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian.
The oppo researcher claimed the source was 'a retired military officer.' According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign."
This report is dated September 10th - long before it was reported that Bill Burkett - a man with long ties to the Democratic Party and peddler of long-since discredited stories about Bush and the ANG - just happened to be the alleged source of the forgeries and coincidentally happened to be "a retired military officer."
So the Kerry campaign, via the DNC from one end and Max Cleland at the other, (is that two sources or one?) gets their hands on these documents and hands them to Dan Rather/CBS.
Rather is putting his career on the line to protect his source within the Kerry campaign because admitting they are forgeries will increase calls from the public to reveal that source, but he's just one of the dominos that are destined to fall because of this scandal...
