Appeals court opens door to music download suits Globe and Mail - Canadians who share music files on the Internet can now be sued by the record industry, but it will not be an easy process, according to legal experts.
A Canadian Federal Court of Appeal's decision, released Thursday afternoon, upheld a ruling last year denying the recording industry's demand that Internet Service Providers be forced to reveal the identities of 29 people that the Canadian Recording Industry Association had identified as major downloaders. But the appeals decision is being interpreted as a win by both sides in the music download debate, since it left the door open to future suits when the judge indicated copyright law must still be respected.

Winnipeg students target Depp for smoking in films Globe and Mail - It's hard to argue against the idea that Johnny Depp is smokin' hot, but for a group of Winnipeg high school students, it's not a compliment. West Kildonan Collegiate's SWAT team -- Students Working Against Tobacco -- has handed out its first annual Black Lung Awards to movie stars and films that promote smoking to young people.
Some recipients were obvious -- Al Pacino in Scarface, Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones' Diary and Depp in pretty much every movie he does.
But the group also singled out some surprise honorees, such as Disney villainess Cruella de Vil and 11-year-old Dakota Fanning, who won SWAT's Second-Hand Smoke Award.
