Wall Street Journal "dress for success" advice you never expected to see:
"It's not necessary to dress up in a suit -- but if you are interviewing with an employer that has a conservative workplace culture, you probably don't want to show up as a troll or mermaid."
According to the story, A Job Interview You Don't Have to Show Up For, Microsoft, Verizon and other real-world corporations are interviewing prospective employees using Second Life. They've taken part in one virtual job fair, and another is planned in August.
My most innovative job interview this year was done in a truckstop parking lot -- on the cell phone, on my way up I-81 to another interview. Maybe it calmed the interview butterflies just enough... the second interview resulted in the offer I couldn't refuse.
Perhaps a Second Life interview or two could serve the same purpose. And if the Wall St. Journal is writing about the phenomenon, maybe recent journalism grads should start building their avatars now, just in case there's a virtual WSJ recruiter under construction too.
