One of the interesting components of the IBM case is IBM's lack of absorptive capacity. While it has access to a plethora of external information through university relationships and client contacts, it clearly lags behind Microsoft and other firms in terms of its application ability. For those interested in the history of the internet, the following is a great link that I got through my last quarter Management of Technology class with Professor Stern: http://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/~mulzer/hoc/www2.html.
