KPFA's Apprenticeship Program KPFA's apprenticeship program teaches radio production and engineering to under-represented voices in media, namely women and people of color. It's an extensive 18-month program, which not only teaches radio skills, but gives people the opportunity to work with and learn from a diverse group of people. The program, which started in 1985, is now being developed for the other 4 Pacifica stations around the country (LA, DC, TX, and NY) under the direction of founder Norman Jayo and current director Amelia Gonzales. This is truly exciting development. It has been a long and painful struggle for the program to gain this recognition and potential to reach a lot more people. When I look around radio stations and radio conferences and see so few people of color or other under-represented people it begs the question: Who gets to tell the stories, whose stories are being told?
I am a proud graduate of this program and carry its mission with me. |
