aimee's books of the month club
Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
A graphic (as in drawn in comic-book style) autobiography about a young women coming of age in Iran in the 1980s. She blends her dream-world with the real-world instability in Iran. Very moving.

Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller
Another childhood autobiography. Fuller grews up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Her writing captures the chaos, violence and beauty the landscape in a non-long-winded way. Every other chapter I'd literally gasp--her family's seat-of-the-pants living, the racism, and death. Very candid, and not overanalysed--which lets the reader experience her life as it was lived.

City Lights Mural

A picture named citylightsmuraltop.jpeg

A few years ago my friend Jeff Conant coordinated the making of this amazing mural on City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco. It's a re-creation of a mural destroyed in 1998 by the Mexican army. The original was painted in Taniperla, a Zapitista community in Chiapas, Mexico as a celebration of local autonomy.
