The Bookworm Strikes Again
we are not lost
we know where we are
but out itinerary is chance and weather
we do not believe in destinations
and we are in no hurry
we have learned patience from statues in a thousand parks
and joy from dogs without collars.

-written by an anonymous homeless youth

This poem starts off Learning Joy from Dogs without Collars, a
memoir by Lauralee Summer about growing up homeless. She eloquently
describes the gravity and instability of poverty. A precocious child,
she was reading by age two, Shakespeare by 6. Her book a day habit
and her later academic research on poverty at Harvard are reflected in
the book, grounded in enough personal stories to make this a smart and
engaging read.
