Patrick Berry adds hopeful words to my comment:
Of course I'm wrong!. From Y.B. Normal
This is, in fact, wrong. Hamas has a very clear agenda it sells. That it is possible, through a terror war of attrition, to destroy the state of Israel and take its place. This is response to my post about Breaking Terrorist. The recent story about the woman bomber who bailed at the last minute is what came to my mind. Hamas or Islamic Jihad had basically used the fact that her boyfriend had been killed. It wasn't just about the greater glory of Palestine or pushing Isreal into the sea. Maybe their original message is getting harder to sell? [pberry: Radio Edition]
If only it were so. I'm afraid this anecdotal case demonstrates just the opposite. After years of massive propaganda efforts in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, human life has lost it meaning in the eyes of the Palestinians. People who would not have given any consideration to taking another's life are now contemplating mass murders.
Why are they used instead of religious zealots? Because (1) they are harder to spot, and (2) using them creates a positive-feedback effect which is necessary to keep this war alive on the Palestinian side. Consider that after almost two years of bloody war, the Palstinians have gained virtually nothing. Hatred is the fuel used to keep this pointless war going.
