Here is an interesting quote from Russ Lipton's article, Why RTFM Won't Work: Documentation As Narrative "Isn't this why Radio is more fun than Manila is more fun than Frontier is more fun than More is more fun than ThinkTank?" This verifies the lineage of Radio that I had pieced together from reading UserLand web pages, as well as memories from my early Macintosh days.
  • ThinkTank was the original outlining tool created by Dave Winer. It originally ran on the Apple II but was ported to Macintosh.
  • The Macintosh GUI was such an aid to outlining that Winer was able to add a lot of enhancements to ThinkTank on Macintosh. The results had so much more capability that he renamed the application to "More".
  • Frontier was created as an early (pre AppleScript) scripting language for MacOS, and the Frontier IDE used a More-like outlining tool for writing the code. I don't yet know if Frontier requires the use of an outliner, or if it just greatly benefits from it.
  • Frontier was evolved from simply a tool for local scripting into an object oriented website management tool. This was in the days of early Perl CGI scripts that had started to get out of hand for complex web sites. Frontier websites had dynamically generated HTML based on an object database.
  • I think Manilla is an enhancement to Frontier, putting an easy to use web based user interface on top of Frontier. I think it especially facilitates multi-user website creation.
  • Radio seems to be a single user, personal version of Manilla, especially oriented towards news aggregation and blogging. However, it is built on the foundation of Frontier, so it promises to evolve into much more.

Radio as a Python IDE is an add-on module to Radio that lets you use the outlining tool as a Python editor. Since Python syntax is indentation dependent, this sounds like a great idea. Python is another of the many things I want to learn soon. Since it is cross-platform, I'll probably get to it sooner than AppleScript.

Macscripter looks to be a good resource for AppleScript stuff. This is one of the many things I would like to learn soon.
