Sony Playstation 2 has 10 times the market penetration of Microsoft's XBox. XBox Live is Microsoft's online strategy for closing that gap. The NYTimes article is here.

Although I am very impressed with the XBox technology, the Sony technology is also very good. There are some great games available for both systems. Their very different online strategies may be the deciding factor for some people, including myself. I don't really have much interest in paying a monthly subscription fee to use Microsoft's online servers when I am already paying $40 per month on high speed Internet access. So, I think Sony's strategy may be the better solution.
