Last night I met up with Brian Jacobson. He and I founded GameFx with some other guys after we both left Looking Glass. He now works at Valve so I was able to catch up a bit about what all my friends in the game industry have been up to. Its still as wild as wacky as ever.. the best stories were about hanging out with John Carmack and learning about rockets. Valve can take their time with Team Fortress 2 and go for high-quality. Its a luxury that most of us in software don't have. How many times have you been on a project when you could say, "hey, it will ship when its ready and its ready when I say it is". Much more often its, "it will ship in Q3 or heads will roll".
