KFC are the target of a growing movement of people who are concerned about how animals are kept and are killed. There is even talk of standards and labelling that will describe these conditions.
Hudder points to Britain's example. An organization called Freedom Foods regularly checks out farms and puts labels on foods they consider humane.
Freedom Food eggs have ballooned in sales – from 100,000 eggs sold in 1994 to 80 million in 2000.
The Five Freedoms
The SPCA is developing its program after the one in Britain, which promises five freedoms. They are freedom:
- from fear and distress
- from pain, injury and disease
- from hunger and thirst
- from discomfort
- to express normal behaviour
But the idea has been slow to catch on in Canada.
