A voice for dogs and curbing drug dealers. A bill banning the surgical silencing of pets is headed for the New Jersey state senate. The state assembly unanimously approved the so-called "debarking" measure Monday. Drug dealers use surgically silenced watchdogs as "stealth weapons," while dog owners have the surgery done to silence their pets.The bill would make it illegal to perform the operation without cause, with up to a 5 year prison sentence and $15,000 fine.

Canadians are doing right by dogs and people: How do they do it? Spokane, Washington officials want to know how Calgary Animal Services last year managed to limit the number of dogs put down to 188 of the 5,100 taken in. US cities end up putting down an average of 2,000 dogs for the same amount taken in. The secret may lie in responsible dog ownership.
