This is a geat opportunity to combine history and astronomy. Just be careful how you view the sun (indirectly or through welding goggles.)James Cook and the Transit of Venus. The best reason to watch the 2004 transit of Venus across the Sun is history. [Science @ NASA]

Today's blog is brought to you by the number phi.

Euclid: AB/AC=AC/CB If CB =1 and AC=x, then x^2 - x - 1 = 0.

The ratio of a pentagon's diagonal to its side is phi.

phi = 1.61803 39887 49894 84820 45868 34365 63811 77203 09179 80576

phi = (1 + sqrt(5))/2

From above phi^2 = phi + 1

1/phi = phi - 1

Kepler: As the Fibonacci series approaches infinity the ratio of adjacent Fibonacci numbers approaches phi.
