Letter to The McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology
Mediaburn e-mailed the following letter on internet content syndication today to The McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto:
Dear McLuhan Program,
This letter is sent to encourage the McLuhan Program to research and exercise consideration in its use of internet syndication formats.
The Atom syndication format is an attempt to develop a format to the exclusion of the users and developers who have supported the RSS format. Atom is by design not compatible with RSS, the media technology largely responsible for the growth and inter-networking of weblogs.
I discourage the McLuhan Program from using Atom, which is specifically designed not to work with RSS and appears predatory in nature. As such, Atom seems inconsistent with the mandate of the McLuhan Program.
I am not affiliated with the author of RSS or Harvard University, who offers the specification. I am an independent electronic publisher in Arizona who is using RSS. In addition to your own research, I believe syndication formats are a media topic to consider for discussion on the McLuhan Program Weblog.
Sincerely,
Gary Santoro Editor Mediaburn.net
