Chronicling 25 Years of The Smithereens on June 13, 2004
New York, NY, January 27, 2004-King Leisure, Straight Outta Da 'Burbs,
the
first full-length feature film written and directed by Pat DiNizio,
founder
of the seminal New York/New Jersey punk-tinged rock band The
Smithereens,
will debut at the 4h Annual DIY Film Festival on February 6, 2004 at
the
Gallery Theater in Barnsdall Art Park, 4800 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood,
CA.
at 8:30pm. Admission is free by RSVP.
Filmed in digital video in just 40 days for less than $60,000, King
Leisure,
SOB is the comedic, semi-autobiographical story of an aging rock star
who
successfully reinvents himself by super-imposing his improbable
conservative
mores on a changing youth culture while up-ending many of the
traditional
practices of the music industry.
Translating the mock-/rock-umentary format into a hip-hop-umentary, the
film's unscripted outline was honed by several cast members over sushi and
karaoke (no one said sake) on a warm New York night in the spring of
2003.
Casting no professional actors, the story of Vinny Albachiero (DiNizio)
unfolds, from his long run at the top of the charts fronting the
world-famous Warlocks (The Smithereens), to his evolution into the
unlikely,
right wing, middle-aged white rapper, King Leisure.
In his new persona, King trades in his guitar and Beatle-esque writing
style
for the def beats and dope rhymes with which the kids are so down. He
haplessly follows terrible advice from a team of outdated "experts"
including his incompetent manager, Morey Haderstein (Severo Jormacion),
and
an opportunistic, parasitic publicist, Eva Destruction, (E.M. Pfaff)
who
enable each other into an implausible understanding of the pop culture
landscape as it exists today.
Complicating matters is the media's fascination with King?s
groupie-turned-girlfriend-turned-ex, Jody St. Vincent (Arwa J. Damon),
now a
well-known yet statutory TV personality ready to tell tales outta da
old
school to the highest bidder.
"This film is a cross between It's A Wonderful Life and Spinal Tap, and
one
I've dreamed of making since I re-tooled On Her Majesty's Secret
Service in
a New Jersey sewage ditch with some schoolmates using a Super-8 camera
back
in ninth grade", explains DiNizio (he declined to explain exactly when
ninth
grade was).
To attend the free premiere of King Leisure, SOB, you must RSVP no
later
than 4pm February 6, 2004. Details and location for a post-premiere
acoustic
jam featuring Pat DiNizio and Friends will be announced immediately
after
the film.
The film's title track, The King Leisure Theme, can be downloaded free
and
legally at www.patdinizio.com/kingleisure. Leave no artist behind.
Pat DiNizio and other cast members are currently available for phone
and
local market interviews and will be accessible for live interviews in
Hollywood from February 5-9, 2004. Please contact Dawna Destruction for
further information and scheduling.
On June 13, 2004, Capitol Records will release a two-CD anthology and
DVD
documenting 25 amazing years with The Smithereens.
