Infared Portraits
Infrared Portraits. Do people glow in the dark? Th .... Infrared Portraits.
Do people glow in the dark? They do in infrared!
Infrared is mainly heat radiation and all warm-blooded animals, including humans, generate their own heat.
Look at images taken by a thermal infrared camera which translates the infrared radiation emitted by these people into visible light colors which we can see with our eyes.
The brightest areas are the warmest while the darkest areas are the coolest. Notice how some people have cold noses, while others have cold lips. (6218) [The Presurfer - Your Daily Dose of Diversion]

Roots of Expressionist Fab
THE CHELSEA GIRLS by Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol's CHELSEA GIRLS THE CHELSEA GIRLS: I've just scanned the title page of film 7/67, together with an article by Jonas Mekas about the 'New American Cinema'; an interview with Andy Warhol and a review of Chelsea Girls. It's all here. And I'm seriously thinking about setting up a proper website - the .mac homepage stuff might be good for photos, but for a documentation like this it just doesn't work. Well, let's see. [The Cartoonist]

Re: Benson, Arizona
BENSON, ARIZONAApple iPod displays the song Benson, Arizona, from the movie Dark Star

Many thanks to my friend ___ for pointing me to this site with lyrics and music for "Benson, Arizona." This is the sad country song that plays over the opening credits of John Carpenter's 1974 classic "Dark Star."

The lyrics, which I find quite touching, tell the story of an astronaut whose faster-than-light star trekking causes him to stay young while the girl he's left behind becomes elderly. This portion is particularly poignant:

A million suns shine down
But I see only one
Tryin' to think I'm over you
I find I've just begun
The years go faster than the days
There's no warmth in the light
How I miss those desert skies
Your cold touch in the night

This seems an appropriate item to end 2003 on, I think. Happy new year!

Blog Post From Howard Dean
Thank you for all that you're doing.

I'm here in Burlington and thinking back over the last year and I'm simply astounded by what you have accomplished. We have gone through the most extraordinary year in any presidential campaign's history. Last January, no one would have believed what you have done was possible -- raising $40 million and building a campaign of more than 550,000 people united in taking our country back.

This election is not about changing presidents; it's about changing America. It's about all of us coming together to restore our democracy.

Keep doing what you're doing. Your hard work and efforts have built this campaign, and together we are going to win the nomination and defeat George Bush in 2004.

Have a Happy New Year, and thank you.

White Whale Tour '93
1993 Van Tour. A picture named VanTour1993.jpg
Yes folks, from 1991 through sometime in 1994 we toured in this van, which we affectionately called the white whale...we played a show and then started driving towards the next town...a very small bunk in the back allowed one person to sleep... [Ottmar Liebert]

Clear Channel Goes Indie?
Clear Channel Goes Indie?. When you hear the words "Clear Channel," you probably don't think "Indie." But on Christmas night, Clear Channel's Los Angeles affiliate KDL switched from a failing dance format to Indie 103-1: "Your Independent Radio Station."

Take a look at these two hourly playlists, to get a grasp of the new format. It's not college radio by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a more eclectic mix of music (e.g. Postal Service, Polyphonic Spree, Jeff Buckley, X) than any other commercial radio station in Southern California. And, even more shocking, the station will be running without on-air "personalities" or commercial interruptions for the next few weeks.

The switch seems distinctly out-of-character for "radio's big bully", known for its secretive payola schemes. Why the sudden interest in providing an outlet for new music?

In Los Angeles, the "alternative" market has long been dominated by Infinity Broadcasting's KROQ. In the last few years, it's evolved into a corporate rock nightmare without any competition. Without an adequate alternative to the non-stop stream of Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park clones, many listeners simply turned off their radios.

One of the new taglines for Indie 103-1 is "bringing the alternative back to Los Angeles," a direct jab at the new KROQ. By providing a more diverse station, Clear Channel will likely be able to profit off new bands that aren't getting exposure from KROQ, while attracting KROQ's alienated audience.

If you're interested, I highly recommend reading Los Angeles Radio-Info, a message board for local radio insiders. They're following the story closely, with tons of great commentary and speculation. It's an interesting glimpse into the feud between radio's two biggest conglomerates. If successful, Clear Channel's "Indie" experiment may have surprising consequences across the nation's radio landscape. [Waxy.org]
