Ballyhoo 1935 A.D. Bally Hula!. I went digging through the magazine racks at our local antique mall yesterday, and emerged with a 1935 issue of Ballyhoo, a humor magazine published by Dell between the years of 1931 and 1939. This particular issue features a South Seas theme, which should be abundantly obvious from the glorious hula girl on the cover (is that Bob Hope strumming the uke and leering from underneath his straw boater?). The contents are a mixture of Playboy-style vintage adult cartoons and Mad Magazine-ish lampoons. I'm sure this was pretty sophisticated and edgy stuff back in the Thirties, but today it seems hopelessly quaint, not to mention un-PC in the extreme.
