ANNOUNCEMENTS:
If you value the services you receive in support of your local library from the State Library and Library Service Area's the time has come for you to make your opinion known to the office of the Governor.
UNOFFICIAL #'s
SLI cut (this year) circa 25% of budget
LSA's 6.1% of budget
Local Libraries (Next year, All state levels of support) circa 27%
Open Access cut apx 33%
Access plus cut apx 35%
BUDGET NOTE: Beware of the claims that "We added X$ to ____ program." It is usually a stole from Peter to pay Paul scam. Look at the total budget for the local libraries from all sources. ASK about "new" dollars for serving Iowans in libraries.
And plan your spending/income from "state" sources to be 25 - 30 % LESS than last year.
NOTE: With Mr. Sixta's retirement at the end of this month NE will not have anyone to provide No Charge building consulting.
Your local friendly editor has said it before and reminds you once again: With the loss of budget comes the loss of services NEILSA can no longer pick up or maintain services - the resources both fiscal and human are no longer available.
Good news - Today the Governor struck down the provisions that stripped the Medical Library from the State Library of Iowa.
THANK YOU to all of you who wrote and called.
EDITORIAL COMMENT: (Ken) The idea of removing the Medical Library for the State Library of Iowa was one that should be studied, and a study is planned, BUT to do it as it was done is very short sighted, in terms of service to Iowians, for whom this is the library of both first and last resort to answer medical questions. That by the way is most of YOU.
If one were both cynical and questioning of the motives of "some" one might wonder if maybe someone (unnamed) might be looking for some office space, maybe someone who had previously been rebuffed in a power grab for the entire building, but then again none of us are the kind to suspect that.
This time in EYE-OPENER: (Edited)
1) June 7th ICN Session Introduces EBSCOHost Databases
2) "Library 101" Coming Up June 12th
3) Orange City P.L. Moving Sale
4) New "Iowans Read" Poster Available
1) June 7th ICN Session Introduces EBSCOHost Databases: By this writing, public libraries should have received a packet from the State Library, soliciting your interest in joining the EBSCOHost project. EBSCOHost is a package of databases that provides your patrons with literally hundreds of full-text magazines aimed at all age levels. Unlike ELECTRIC LIBRARY, EBSCOHost is not free; but it is available to Iowa's public libraries at minimal cost. Public libraries are asked to pay a base amount of $25.00 plus $.02 cents per capita.
The recent information packet from the State Library includes explanations of how this project will unfold, descriptions of the databases, an FAQ page, along with the "EBSCO Participation Sign Up Sheet for Public Libraries." This is the page I want to call your attention to: it's simply a 1-page form that asks you to check "yes, I want to subscribe to the EBSCO databases." Then fill in your library's name, address, phone, etc. Once completed, mail this commitment sheet to the State Library; you'll then be invoiced for your EBSCO subscription (the price again is $25.00 plus $.02 cents per capita)
This is a great opportunity to provide access to a wealth of electronic, full-text magazines at minimal local cost. There will be lots of opportunities to learn more about EBSCO. Like this
Friday (TODAY) for instance:-) June 7th, from 9:00--11:00AM, the State Library will be offering an ICN session to introduce the EBSCO project and provide a demonstration.
This is strictly an informational session; no registration is necessary and no c.e. credits awarded.
2) "Library 101" Coming Up June 12th: "Library 101," an orientation specifically targeted to new public library directors, is coming up again next Wednesday June 12th. This program runs from 9:00--12:00 and is worth 3 c.e. credits.
Always offered over the ICN, "Library 101" is sponsored 4 times each year by the Iowa Library Service Areas. Anyone is welcome and it is a good review for the experienced director and staff..
If you're new to your director's position, or if you have new staff people who would benefit from this orientation, please call or email NEILSA with any questions. Please note: ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED, so we can mail you a packet of workshop handouts prior to the broadcast. Register with NEILSA by Monday morning of next week--thanks!
3) Orange City P.L. Moving Sale: Orange City Public Library is having a moving sale which includes MANY books, as well as card catalog units. They have three 9-drawer card catalog units (without tables or legs) one 12-drawer unit (without table or legs) and one 60-drawer unit with legs. The card catalogs are being sold by silent auction with bidders recording their numbers and bids on a log sheet next to each item. All bidding ends Saturday June 8th at 5:00PM. Contact Karla Chase at Orange City with questions...
4) New "Iowans Read" Poster Available: Many libraries purchased the first "Iowans Read" poster a few years ago, which featured Governor and Mrs. Vilsack. A new poster is now available from the Iowa Library Association, this time featuring St. Louis Rams quarterback--and Super Bowl winner--Kurt Warner and his family. Display the poster in your library, but also consider what a great "end-of-the-summer-reading-prize" this would be, given this summer's reading theme "Join the Winners' Circle." Posters sell for $6.00; payment must accompany the order form. There are still some remaining copies of the Vilsack poster available too--you can order both from the same form. The order form appeared in the May/June issue of THE CATALYST.
YOU WROTE: snippets from your e-mails:
S-WUG Meeting: The next meeting of the Spectrum Winnabago Users Group will be June 6 at the Fayette Community Library - begin at 9:00.
FEEDBACK:
Survey: Should LSA's go to a "Fee for Service" Model?
BACKGROUND - In most other places the state/regional agency(s) equal of the Iowa Library Service Areas are called System Libraries or Regional Systems or some such. Nearly all of them operate on a membership/fee for service basis.
As all of you are well aware the last round of budget cuts have finally pushed the LSA's up to the wall, the next round ....
Just as we have told YOU, when the funders do not come up with the funds to make the service available some other source of support will have to be found or developed OR service dropped. Looking around from the LSA point of view, guess where one of those "sources" is?? How would it work we don't know BUT as an example of how it works elsewhere:
CE: Members of the System Library pay $20.00/hour for continuing education Non-members pay retail $65.00 - $120.00/hour for the same class. NOTE: This is an example NOT a proposal.
CHANGES: Updates – Addresses & such -
