In the EYE-OPENER from NWILSA:
Good Morning! This time in EYE-OPENER (Edited ):
1) EBSCO Training - clip local information - EBSCO trainer Matt Andros is conducting the classes, which are worth 2 c.e. credits. [See ANNOUNCEMENTS for NEILSA dates.]
You'll remember that EBSBOHost is a package of databases providing your patrons with literally hundreds of full-text magazines aimed at all age levels. Unlike Electric Library, EBSCOHost is not free, but it is available to Iowa's public libraries at minimal cost. Public libraries are asked to
pay a base amount of $25.00 plus $.02 cents per capita. All libraries are enjoying a free trial period through the end of August. - clip local data-
3) More Harry Potter Activity Sheets: NWILS has some new Harry Potter Activity Sheets, just in time for the paperback release of HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. These sheets are reproducible, so we're happy to send copies to interested Northwest libraries. This time there's a word search puzzle, a maze, and a crossword puzzle. If interested, just email NEILSA & we will send to you.
YOU WROTE: snippets from your e-mails:
Judy Jones writes;
I (Judy) received "...another message today (7/15) from a library not receiving userids and passwords. (For EBSCOHost) I don't know if it is a matter of people thinking it was advertisement and deleting or what, but the email address to library sent by EBSCO was correct. I have had many such emails/calls in the last weeks saying that the library never received the message. and I just resend the original message from ebsco and put in the information specific for that library. Don't know exactly what happened but you might want to check with your libraries just to make sure they DID receive the information. OK - This is your check if you have had problems let us know.
REMINDER
Q: "We missed the deadline for filing the e-rate form with you, why didn’t we get a call?"
Method I am using is to tell libraries that we do not have the time or staff to beg anymore. I put it in the Friday Notes(1), I fax those who do not get e-mail(2), based on bounces and short list of "down" & out computer/e-mail/fax, I US mail (3) to that shorter list [of "down" & out Computer, Fax and e-mail]. I've told everyone that if you get it by fax you have already lost 2 days and if by mail 4 - 5 days. Miss the deadline and live with the results. This is part of what budget cuts mean, no safety net. We do not like to have to do this but .....
NOTE: This is another reason why you should be certain to let the LSA know if your e-mail/fax/phone is out of working order/down. We try to get the news to everyone - once - but if it fails you well might not know about something. If it is real important you might get both an e-mail & Friday Notes or Friday Notes and fax, but that is reserved for things of a "heavy" nature.
FEEDBACK: C.E. Flyers Coming as WORD attachments:
NWILS is experimenting with a new twist in workshop promotion. You've told us (NW) repeatedly that you prefer receiving our C.E flyers on paper and we're happy to oblige. I believe that paper flyers are great visual reminders of upcoming workshops, they're reproducible, and easily shared with your board and staff. And I also believe that paper flyers help boost program attendance; if C.E. attendance in Northwest region is any indication, flyers are definitely doing the trick!
However, in the interest of saving time and postage, NWILS will begin sending C.E. flyers electronically as WORD attachments. Simply open the WORD document, print the flyer, and copy it for your boards and staff. For your convenience, you can register several ways: by returning the flyer by mail or fax, by email, or by phone. If returning the flyer by mail, please remember to include any registration fees. (Clip local material)
[In NEILSA you retain the usual "other ways" of registering & getting information.
Survey: Question: would you also like to have "Word Attachments" Flyers?
REPLIES - Please reply using the "comments" button at the bottom of the page
CHANGES: Updates – Addresses & such - None (that we know of)!
CONSORTIA: New Four-Page E-rate Overview Document Available (07/15/02)
The SLD has prepared a four-page document entitled "E-rate Discounts for Schools and Libraries." This document provides a brief but complete overview of the entire application process, from the preparation of the Technology Plan to the receipt of discounts by either the applicant or the service provider. By reading this short document, potential applicants can gain a clear understanding of the requirements of the E-rate process and be encouraged to participate. Also good overview for Boards and other interested groups, add it as a handout for your prestations to service clubs and the city council.

Subject: The Economy - why no one is buying the stock market.
OR how to invest YOUR Social Security money!! Subject: Fw: Investing
If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.
If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one year ago, drank all the beer, then traded in the cans at HyVee for the nickel deposit, you would have $107.00.
Given the current conditions of the economy, my advice is to drink heavily and recycle.
