Link:** Browser Security Issues A Go-Go
Internet Explorer has a bad security hole; learn more about
it at http://news.com.com/2100-1001-949551.html . There
doesn't seem to be a patch available for it yet. In the
meantime, Opera has released version 6.05 of its browser,
which fixes an OpenSSL security issue. Read about this new
version and download it from
http://www.opera.com/windows/changelog/log605.html .
You have reached the end of the web... RIIIIIIIGHT!!!
** Google Bigger
According to Google's front page, the Google index now
searches 2,469,940,685 pages. In June 2000, I freaked out over
the fact that Google was indexing a billion URLs
(
html#googlegoes)
and I find it awfully hard to wrap my mind around almost 2.5
billion pages. Especially thinking about the fact that even Google, with this many pages, is only searching a fraction of
the Web.
Kens Comment: AND people are worried about a few
thousand "dirty" pages...

POEM
- "Glasgow's Poet Laureate Edwin Morgan has written a poem
to mark the opening of the International Federation of Library
Associations and Institutions (IFLA) conference in Glasgow on
Monday 19th August."
"Edwin Morgan will be giving the first public reading of the
poem, The Welcome, at the conference's opening ceremony on
the evening of August 18th. The verse is a tribute to the
knowledge contained in libraries and to their continuing
relevance in the age of digital information and cyberspace." "The event is the 68th IFLA conference, and over 4000
librarians from across the world are expected to attend. This year is also the 75th anniversary of IFLA since its foundation
in Edinburgh in 1927."
"Discussing the poem Edwin Morgan said, "Libraries are still a
vital source of knowledge and information, even in the age of
the Internet. With this poem I wanted to reflect on the changes
taking place in the way we get and access information as we
move into a digital age, whilst still asserting the relevance,
power and endurance of books and the printed word. I hope it
is at one and the same time an entertaining, popular and erudite
work." (from The British Library via Web 4 Lib)
LS Thoughts - The poem is beautiful. I printed it out and
posted it on my board for all to see when they walk in my
office. (8/21/2002 10:28:00 AM)

In the EYE-OPENER from NWILSA:
Good Grief! This time in Eye-Opener: Nothing - Bonnie is on
vacation.
CONSORTIA:
1) As the end of the first Quarter approaches, SLD still has not
approved the Consortia app - so you will continue to get full
bills for the time.
2) Please note for the Gates people and for the SLD
applications for next funding year you need to complete the
"special" Friday Notes" questionnaire that went out last week.
If I know what you are thinking about doing I can better
communicate that to both the Gates Foundation & to SLD.
E.g. If you have poor access Gates will go to work on that
problem sooner & I will be better able to guess if you may
need to have e-rate for additional lines and installation. What
we don’t know about we can not begin to help you with.
YOU WROTE: snippets from your e-mails:
> Ken you said that MediaCom could be had free in last weeks
Friday Notes. We were told otherwise by MediaCom.
THE LAST WORD ON MediaCom:
Cable's High Speed Education Connection is an industry-wide
initiative to provide consenting public libraries and K-12
schools, passed by cable, with free broadband access where
high-speed cable modem service is available.
Utilizing cable's high-capacity networks and digital technology, educators and students can explore the rich
electronic resources and services that are changing the way we
teach and learn.
For more information or to find out if high speed cable modem
service from Mediacom is available in your area, contact Debora Blume at Mediacom.
Her email is: dblume@mediacomcc.com.
Kens Comment: My understanding is that libraries in a MediaCom served area may get/hook up - up to four
computers to a MediaCom cable modem at NO charge, If
you wish to hook up additional computers there is a charge
for every thing over the first four.
Please note that Mediacom does not do the networking of the
computers. MediaCom will hook to one computer, however,
their technicians are not trained to do networking. You will
need to do that yourselves, hire someone to network the
additional computers to the modem or get the Gates people to
help you out with it.
MediaCom is an e-rate eligible vendor check for S.P.I.N. on
the SLD web site under "MediaCom%".

If you only know the chorus or one lyric from a particular track
search using get lyrical for a list of possible song titles and artist matches."
(via Black Stump) LS [ Thoughts - It also makes a great bookmark for ready-reference. There are no pop-up ads here and it is easy to use.
Search by lyric, song title, or artist.
KD Comment: Sorry I forgot the link on this one or I used
angle brackets [<>] anyway it was missing.
END PLATE: Long Announcements, Supporting
Documents, & other "stuff"
TELLING OUR STORY:
From The Personals (From a Detroit newspaper) Truly!!
The following personal ad was submitted to the Town Gazette
newspaper in my town:
"SINGLE WHITE FEMALE... Seeks male companionship,
ethnicity unimportant. I'm a svelte good looking girl who
LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your
pickup truck, hunting, camping, fishing trips, and cozy winter
nights lying by the fire. Candlelight dinners will have me
eating out of your hand. Rub me the right way and watch me
respond. I'll be at the front door when you get home from
work, wearing only what nature gave me. Kiss me and I'm
yours. Call xxx-xxxx and ask for Daisy."
Callers who responded to this advertisement found themselves
talking to the local Humane Society about an eight-week-old
white mixed-breed puppy.
