regulars."

with which they are seeking to do business."

"In addition, the new Web service can be used to quickly confirm shipping

Mahoney to rescind the ban. "I believe our decision was fundamentally

flawed because it was not based on enough information," she told the

Associated Press (AP). Mahoney believes some board members had not

read the book when they voted to remove it from the library for sexually

explicit content. Mahoney had abstained from the June 26 vote because

she had not read it herself."

LS Thoughts - This story was first brought to my attention this past July.

Now, they have officially banned the book from the library, which

surprises me. I haven't read the book (don't have a teenager in my family - yet)

so can't make any judgments, but from reading about the book, it

seems to relay to teenagers to talk to their parents about sex, drugs, etc. I

thought that was what parents wanted. Gasp!! A book that tells teens to

talk to their parents. That book should be taken off the shelf in every

library across the country. (8/30/2002 6:20:00 AM)
LS [http://www.librarystuff.net]

Comment: "The ban has attracted national media attention, and library

board chairman Wayne Hersen says he’s been flooded by e-mail messages

from around the country, with opinion coming down on both sides of the

issue." ibid SLJ

- "It is called the USA Patriot Act, and the very name implies duty -- duty,

in this case, to tell FBI agents what certain people are reading and writing

at the local library."

"Federal investigators want to strip away the cloak of anonymity that

helped Sept. 11 suspects communicate on public library computers without

detection. A provision buried within the 342-page Patriot Act, which took

effect in October, allows agents to demand records from librarians and

booksellers with unprecedented ease."

"Many in the library community fear an intrusion by Big Brother into the

sacrosanct privacy rights of library patrons. The Patriot Act trumps laws in

48 states, including Florida and Iowa, that specifically protect library

records as confidential." (from The Miami Herald at:

LABOR DAY CLOSING: Northwest’s office was closed for

"Labor Day" on September 2nd. So there was no "Eye-Opener".

CONSORTIA: {xx footnote # 1.}

THE SIMPLE WHAT YOU NEED TO PROVIDE:

"It is preferable that this be a list compiled by the service

provider, who will be more familiar with the details of the

services and products to be provided."

1. ... provide a description of all the services that the service

provider is providing on which discounts are being sought.

a specific itemization of products and/or services to be

provided and the associated costs

2. To facilitate review of your application, your Item (21)

attachment should:

• list the equipment to be maintained and the associated costs

if you are requesting discounts on maintenance services;

• provide itemized details of one-time costs associated with

Internet access or data line services;

• include a quote from the service provider or the criteria used

to estimate costs for new services to be provided under tariff

or month-to-month agreements;

If you are estimating that your costs will exceed the amounts shown

on the bill, you should include as part of the Item (21) attachment an

explanation for an increase in costs.

• If ineligible services are also being provided under this

contract or service agreement, and if they are featured on this

list, the applicant should clearly identify them as ineligible and

the price of those ineligible services

3. Identify the specific Vendor supplying services & Applicant

name

• the service provider’s and contracting party's legal names;

COMMENT: IF you do not understand the request call us, as several of

you have -Thank You. We are here to help you and we want to do that,

that is why we have 800 numbers. But, more and more, this means you

have to ask for the help, with 1.5 FTE’s filling the shoes of 5.5 FTE’s we

can not guess at your needs as we did in the past.

Do not space requests out or ignore them, if you do we can not help you

and will most likely just drop you from the program or application. We

are sorry but you are now paying for the LSA budget cuts, we do not have

the personnel or time to second guess or beg or wheedle the information

out of the libraries. We will try but if you don’t have the data in on time

the odds are that you will not be contacted.

Immediately below is an example:

YOU WROTE: snippets from your e-mails:

Gerry Rowland wrote: "...please don't forget to sign up for

Ebscohost. Two points to consider:

1. You can use Library Infrastructure funding to pay the cost of

your Ebscohost subscription.

2. Subscribing to Ebscohost through the State Library

qualifies your library for Measure 36 of In Service to Iowa,

Periodical Subscriptions.
Ken’s comment con’t. The Ebscohost program is an outstanding resource

which thanks to the State Library is available at a rock bottom charge. In

the past if you had not signed up we would have called and I would have

"been on your case" about it - no more if you mis a deal its missed.

E-RATE:

Q: Am I correct in thinking that for the 486 the funding year is the year

of the program, i.e. year 5 as opposed to the funding period, 2003-2004?

A: You may use any of the forms:

2002-2003 or

HELP this student:

I am considering writing a research paper for Professor Vavrek's rural

libraries class at Clarion (The ONLY library school that specializes in

Rural & Small town serving Libraries) on Library Services for Amish

Communities.

This would involve distributing a survey to librarians whose libraries

serve a number of Amish patrons - if you have experiences in this area

you would be willing to share, please respond off-list.

Thanks,

Margaret

END PLATE: Long Announcements, Supporting Documents, & other

"stuff"

Attention Iowa public librarians and school media specialists! First Lady

Christie Vilsack announces the fall sign up for Year 3 of her Iowa Stories

2000 literacy project.Fifty Iowa libraries so far have become Literacy

Communities involved in projects that have been of great benefit to their

citizens. This cooperative

effort between public librarians and school media specialists involves

people from the community in determining a project that will benefit an

under-served segment of a town's population and bring new patrons into

the library. No community is too small or too large to participate. From

the tiny town of Bayard in Guthrie County to the Public Library of Des

Moines, librarians all across the state are learning how this initiative can

improve services for their customers. To become an Iowa Stories 2000

Literacy Community, contact one of the State Library's AmeriCorps

Promise Fellows (Anne, Joe, or Steve) who facilitate the programs for

each participating library. They may be reached at 515-242-3811 or by

e-mail at Promise@mail.lib.state.ia.us. Sign up deadline is September 30. If

you would like further information regarding Iowa Stories 2000, check out

Mrs. Vilsack's web site, www.christievilsack.org. An information packet is

also available. We would be happy to supply one to interested

communities.
