In the EYE-OPENER from NWILSA: Edited

1) Iowa Small Library Association Meets September 27th: The annual fall

meeting of the Iowa Small Library Association (ISLA) is coming up on Friday

September 27th in Elgin, Iowa. ISLA is a gathering of libraries serving

city populations under 12,000 and meets twice yearly to discuss topics of

interest to small libraries. The fall meeting takes place at Elgin Public

Library and begins with morning refreshments and registration at 9:00AM. A

short business meeting follows at 9:30, with a roundtable discussion next

from 10:00--12:00. After lunch, Wanda Gardner from Decorah Public Library

presents a mini-workshop entitled "Finding Money and Getting Grants," worth

2 c.e. credits. To register, call Bev Strong at Elgin P.L. (563-426-5313)

or email to

2) Stories 2000 with Christie Vilsack Begins Year 3: First Lady Christie

Vilsack has announced the fall sign up for Year 3 of her Iowa Stories 2000

literacy project. Public library directors, boards, and school media

specialists are invited to participate at the local level. To date, 50 Iowa

libraries have become Literacy Communities involved in projects that have

been of great benefit to their residents.

This cooperative effort between public librarians and school media

specialists involves people from the community in determining a project that

will benefit an under-served segment of a town's population and bring new

patrons into the library. No community is too small or too large to participate.

From Bayard in Guthrie County to the Public Library of Des Moines, librarians

all across the state are learning how this initiative can improve services to their

customers.

To become an Iowa Stories 2000 Literacy Community, contact one of the State

Library's AmeriCorps Promise Fellows (Anne, Joe, or Steve) who facilitate

the programs for each participating library. They can be reached at

515-242-3811 or by e-mail at An information

packet is available; we would be happy to supply one to interested

communities. And for further information regarding Iowa Stories 2000, visit

Mrs. Vilsack's web site at

Sign up deadline for Stories 2000 Year 3 is September 30th.

4) Last Call for "Library 101" on September 26th: Brand new library

directors are encouraged to attend the upcoming "Library 101" orientation

over the ICN on September 26th. This is a 3-hour orientation, worth 3 c.e.

credits, that introduces new directors to topics such as board governance,

budget basics, the importance of policies and collection development, along

with explanations of statewide programs. "Library 101" is scheduled from

9:00AM--12:00PM on September 26th. Full details are found on NWILS

website () Support staff and trustees also welcome.

Please register with NEILSA ASAP, so that there's time to mail you a packet

of handouts. Thanks!
