Harry Potter Promotional Idea at Cherokee
P.L.: Here's another great idea, thanks to Cherokee Public Library. Cherokee
P.L. is currently running a promotion entitled "ATTENTION HARRY POTTER FANS."
The 5th book in the series (HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX) debuts
on June 21st.
Anyone willing to donate $10.00 towards the purchase price of a book will
be
guaranteed to be first on the list to borrow a library copy. The library
will purchase as many copies as they have $10.00 donations; a plaque will
be
placed in each copy saying that "...$10.00 of the purchase price for this
book was donated by_____."
In her newspaper column, Director Mary Jo Ruppert explained the rationale
behind this promotion: "We have 3 Harry Potterish problems. The first is
the length of the book. At 768 pages, adults and kids alike will have
trouble finishing the book in 3 weeks, so we are expecting renewals and
renewals. The second problem is the timing of the publication: since school
won't be in session, the public library will be the main source for avid
Potter fans. And the third problem is the purchase price itself, reportedly
averaging around $30.00. While we will receive a discounted price from our
book suppliers, in trying to provide multiple copies to meet the demand,
the
cost will add up quickly..."
Businesses are also welcome to contribute. If the business doesn't care to
actually borrow the book, they can ask that their contribution be designated
as a gift for a child, grandchild, or simply to the library in general. The
library's goal is to receive enough donations to purchase 10--20 copies.
Extra copies have been started with pledges from 2 library staff members.
As of last Friday, the library has already received donations enough to
purchase 12 copies! So thanks to Cherokee P.L. for sharing this idea.

WORLD'S LARGEST WIND FARM
The Iowa House and Senate have approved legislation to help MidAmerican Energy
build the worlds largest land-based wind farm. The legislation is now headed
to Governor Vilsack, who is expected to sign it into law.
MidAmerican Proposal
MidAmerican will invest $323 million for 200 wind generators in Northern
Iowa, with a combined 310 megawatt capacity, enough to power 85,000 homes.
The first units will come on line in 2004, with project completion by the
end of 2006. Each tower pad will cover ¼ acre and provide farmers
with annual payments of about $4,000.

NEW GOOGLE FEATURE: There is a new feature that makes
it possible to
type a telephone number into Google's search bar, click the search
button, and have a MapQuest or Yahoo page returned as a result. Any
person wishing to discover the physical location of a phone number,
be
it a home or business address, could use this feature to locate a
physical street address, and receive explicit directions on how to get
there from anywhere in the country.
One positive use of this feature could be to determine the location of,
say, an party for whom you may only have a telephone number. On a
negative note, this feature could also be used by an angry party to find
out where you live. Google has made available an option that will allow
anyone to remove their telephone number from the database that is linked
to the mapping feature. You will first need to check if your number is
listed in this manner by attempting a search - entering your full
telephone number separated by dashes (e.g., 202-555-1212). If the
number appears in the mapping database, an icon resembling a telephone
will appear next to the first or second entry on the results page.
Clicking on this icon will take you to a page containing a description
of the service, and a link to request your number be removed from the
database. It isn't necessary to input your email address for the removal
request to be accepted, although it may still be able to be determined from
your email response.
Many people are unaware of this danger. I personally, don't
want anyone having a direct map to my house just by
having my phone number. Go to http://www.google.com
then type in your phone
number. See how accurate the map is.... linked to your phone number.

Subj: Friday Notes Problems & e-mail methods
Clearly we are having a few problems with the Friday Notes list. This
seems to have started a couple of weeks ago when it became necessary to set
up a new mail server
[If you want the technical details you will need to talk to Eunice.]
1. So it appears that lots of people did not get the Friday Notes 2.
You can get the Friday Notes 2 by going directly to the blog site at: http://radio.weblogs.com/0108327/
IF you bookmark the site you will have it and can just check the blog at
your convenience. The last 10 issues are kept active on the blog.
The e-mail notice that is sent out:
Friday Notes 2 is on the blog:
AT http://radio.weblogs.com/0108327/
is intended to let you know I have just posted the most current issue.
This usually happens mid-day on Friday, all other things being equal.
Material for inclusion in the Friday Notes 2 is selected through Thursday
afternoon.
2. E-mail procedures: A reminder – the e-mail notice above is sent via an
e-mail list. Since a number of you responded to the "test" message
{THANK YOU} I thought a review of a mailing list procedure is in order.
When you reply to an e-mail PLEASE check the "TO:" line on your e-mail and
make certain you are not sending to the entire list when all you want to
do is reply to an individual, and vice versa.
For a very good discussion of mailing lists go to:

For a library based e-rate [opps] e-mail tutorial go to:
