ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Just in time for your report to the council/supervisors:
An improved version of Web Connect is now available.
Connect allows a library to make historical comparisons or peer comparisons
with other Iowa public libraries. Data from 1999-2002 are available.
The latest enhancements:
The following changes have been made to Connect with the release of version
2.2 (3/31/03)
-Graphs have many options and can be sorted
-Export to Excel Icon on the  Results  Screen when viewing a table.
Data will automatically transfer into Excel.
-Sort options on the  Results  Screen when viewing a table. Sort the
graph based on variables selected (in ascending or descending order)
-The ability to benchmark (average, median, or sum) just the libraries
selected (for example: your peer group)
-The ability to view libraries that make up a particular benchmark. (For
example if you have a benchmark for 76-100% of Total Operating Income, by
clicking on the  i  next to the benchmark will allow you to see the
libraries that make up the top 25% in Total Operating Income.)
- Me  Library will appear in red if included in a results table.
-Mouse over help. Users have the option to turn on  Tool Tips  at the
setup screen. This option provides mouse over help on many of the icons
within the system. A great option for first time users!
Iowa libraries also now have the ability to peer select by LSA and Size
Code.
See http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/for-ia-libraries/statistics/lib-stats.html
for more information.

The Great Library Card Collection
at http://www.webpan.com/msauers/libdir/cards/

Luckily I don't get bored very often because when I do I think up stuff like this...

What I am trying to do is to collect as many valid library cards as I can. As I get them I will post them here. If you wish to have your library's lending card added to this collection please issue a library card to me and send it to the following address:

Michael Sauers
BCR
14394 E Evans Ave
Aurora CO 80014

When the card has been received I will scan it, remove any information beyond my name that might allow someone else to use it and post it here. As the collection grows I'll start breaking the scans down by state/country.

The Friends of the Aplington Library would like to invite you to our Library/Community Center for a presentation by author Don Harstad (retired deputy sheriff from NE Iowa) this coming Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. Please especially encourage your mystery-lover patrons to attend. If you have a copy of one of Don Harstad's books that you would like to bring along I'm sure he would be willing to sign it.
Nancy Huisman, Aplington Public Library

The Iowa Library Association/Association of College and Research Libraries is planning our Spring Conference on May 2nd at the University of Dubuque (IA). It will be a very interesting conference including a keynote speaker well versed in First Amendment issues and breakout sessions on a variety of topics, particularly ones dealing with information literacy. Further information is available at the following URL: http://www.iren.net/acrl/.

    In the EYE-OPENER from NWILSA:
3) "Lawyers for Libraries" Some of your cities and towns have lawyers
serving on the Library Board, and/or lawyers who are library advocates.
So, we thought you would want to know about this ALA-based organization
and its upcoming training institute.
According to the ALA brochure,"Lawyers for Libraries is an ongoing
project designed to build a nationwide network of attorneys committed to
the defense of the First Amendment freedom to read and the application
of constitutional law to library policies, principles, and problems."

On May 12th and 13th, the organization's Midwest Region training
institute will be held in Chicago. Sessions will include:
"The Library as a Public Forum" (includes book removals, Internet
filtering, meeting room issues and patron behavior)
"Unprotected Speech" (includes statutory and case law defining
obscenity, child pornography, and speech "harmful to minors")
" Minimizing Liability" (includes liability for providing patrons with
unfiltered Internet and creating a hostile work environment for
employees)
"Privacy and Confidentiality" (includes subpoenas and search warrants
demanding patron circulation or library use records)
"Panel Discussion" (includes drafting and enforcing library use
policies)
Training is specifically for lawyers and library trustees. Librarians
may attend but would need to be accompanied by an attorney. Cost is
$500. Phone and online registration are options: (800) 5452433 ext. 4226
and http://www.ala.org/lawyers

4) E-Rate News Just a quick "heads-up" on spring E-Rate happenings.
Beginning each year in May, the SLD begins its 3-month process of
sending out colorful, multi-page "Funding Commitment Decision Letters."
These go to libraries that applied, last fall, for discounts beginning
in July. When you receive your bright yellow letter, please photocopy
the first page and the last page(s) that show your funding charts.
Please mail, rather than fax, the copies to Chris at NWILS. She will
need these to complete another step in the process.

5.) Gates Training Bonnie is one of eight delegates from Iowa
attending a two-and-a-half-day training opportunity at the Gates
Foundation in Seattle this week. The training helps pave the way for the
arrival of the new Gates computers. Our LSA is Iowa's largest service
area and it also happens to be receiving the largest number of computers
 89. There will also be one new computer for our administrative office.
Bonnie's training is an all-expense-paid trip, courtesy of the Gates
Foundation, bearing no cost to our office. One of the training
components is ways the LSAs and the State Library can support "future
sustainability" - ongoing training in the software after the Gates
consultants have gone home. Bonnie's training will take place Monday
Wednesday, with her back in the office Thursday.

YOU WROTE: snippets from e-mails:
Hi librarians,
I'm delighted that you are promoting Bev Larsen's presentations at your
various libraries. We have four new speakers on our roster, just waiting
for you to call and book them into your library. Go to our web site and
follow the link from the front page to read their program description. The
application for Speakers Bureau program is also on the web site - follow the
links from the Speakers Bureau link on the side bar of the front page. Or
call if you have any questions.
Also, we are in process of revising our Speakers Bureau booklet and should
have copies for you by September. If you have any suggestions, please send
them along. Thanks.
