This week in Eye-Opener:
1. Budget Cuts News Release
2. Reinventing Your Collection
3. Directorship Changes at Our Public Libraries
2. Reinventing Your Collection - Librarians are already looking into
reducing their collection budgets due to "Reinvention." NWILS may be
able to help you in ways you had not yet thought about. For example, I
recently received e-mail from the director of the Norelius Public
Library. She asked me if NWILS has access to a biographical resource she
was considering dropping. It is no longer frequently used and is quite
expensive. "Yes," I told her, "our resource library has Current
Biography. I can photocopy entries for you when you need them."
So, when you are looking for ways to save money on your collection, but
still retain access, remember that "back-up" reference and interlibrary
loan are available through your Library Service Area.
NEILSA NOTE: We also would like to remind you of the
LSA back-up services in reference and ILL. I also have received calls
about dropping seldom used reference materials, same reference source is
often mentioned. But we can not/will not promise you a "copy" from
a single source. We will attempt to get you the information you need
but we are experienced enough to know that on occasion we run into copyright
limits and may need the get the data for you from sources less than our first
(easiest) choice.
EDITORIAL STATEMENT: As you look at ways to save money
think about the alternatives, the Internet is one, your LSA is another, but
there are others. You neighboring libraries and your school libraries
have the same problems and most of you have MANY duplications in your collections.
Now is the time to fix this, you should be comparing those expensive reference
tools and see what you can drop because your patrons don't use it much and
another nearby library also holds the material. You also need to sit
down with the other librarians and media center specialist and develop a
plan for real bibliographic sharing. Sooner or later "someone" is going
to come to the realization that 3 public libraries and 2 school libraries
in a 20 mile circle do not all NEED the "World Book" - it would be best if
the 3 librarians and the 2 media center people were the ones making this
decision, not the city clerk/mayor/superintendent et. al.
No one from the LSA or the State Library is going to come and make you cooperate
on this kind of project, YOU have to do it. BUT if you were to get
a group together we will be happy to come and help you put together a co-op
bibliographic system to help save you money.

BOOK Suggestion
"I find it surprising that with the current popularity of the The Lord of
The Rings movies and subsequent rise in sales of the trilogy and The Hobbit
that so few bookshops stock more of the Professor's other works. Fortunately
this volume makes it easier. It puts four of his works in one, Farmer Giles
of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil Leaf By Niggle and Smith of Wootton
Major." http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/06/1535236
