EFFECTIVE ADVOCACY TIP
When you go to the doctor for a specific illness do you find it more effective
to tell the doctor specifically what's wrong? Or is it more effective to
make them guess ("I don't know Dr. Jones, what do YOU think hurts?"). The
same is true for Congressional offices: it's no wonder that 76% of respondents
to a recent AdVanced Consulting survey of Congressional staff said that advocates
should ask for something specific (http://www.advocacyguru.com/staffsurvey.htm).
Consider these thoughts from the staff:
ü "Be specific."
ü "Get to the specifics and tell me what they want."
ü "Always keep in mind what staff is thinking when you're visiting:
Why are you here, what do you need from us and how is it relevant to the
Congressman and the District?"
Follow their advice and think specifically about what your elected officials
can do to help you solve your problem!
The ILA Intellectual Freedom Committee has revised and updated the
Association's Intellectual Freedom Emergency Kit. The kit is now
available as a PDF document on the ILA Web site at
http://www.iowalibraryassociation.org/
Please note that it will not be
distributed in print format.
The Emergency Kit includes guidelines for handling intellectual freedom
challenges, as well as a PulseWatch form to be used in reporting local
incidents. The Intellectual Freedom Committee encourages the reporting
of all challenges in order that it might become aware of patterns or of
particular titles that have been targeted for removal from local
collections. Committee members, identified in the kit, are available
for consultation.

Applications are now available for libraries wishing to host Cyberchase
Library Workshops. This new initiative will introduce children to
math... Cyberchase style! Thirteen public and school libraries will be
selected to host the workshops based on Cyberchase, a popular daily
children's PBS animated series. Libraries interested in applying for
the grant opportunity can download an application and guidelines at
http://www.ala.org/publicprograms/.
Applications must be received by July 31,
2003.

We had a patron request for some Spanish/English Medical Dictionaries last
week. Unfortunately, all we could really offer her was information on the
Internet. Does anyone have recommendations for current bilingual medicaldictionaries,
both for reference and circ, and also both for lay people and
for professionals?
