ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Beth Henning of the State Library's State Data Center has developed two new web pages -
'Iowa Quick Facts' and 'Guide to Iowa Caucus Web Sites.'
Both are located near the top of the State Library's home page,
http://www.silo.lib.ia.us

Iowa Quick Facts provides lots of useful statistics and information about the state, including:
Population
Land Area and Urbanization
Business and Industry
Employment
Vital Statistics
Households and Families
General Demographic Characteristics
Social Characteristics
Economic Characteristics
Housing Characteristics
Governmental Units: Counties, Cities and Townships
Statistical Units: Census Geography
and more.

The Iowa Caucus Web Sites has links to some high quality information.
We think you and your customers will find these sites useful!

MONDAY MORNING EYE OPENER [from NWILS]
1) Multiple Copies of NIAGARA FALLS ALL OVER AGAIN
2) NIAGARA FALLS Over the ICN
3) Books Added to NWILS Library Management Collection
4) NWILS Office Closed January 1st

1) Multiple Copies of NIAGARA FALLS ALL OVER AGAIN: As you know, the book chosen for the 2004 ALL IOWA READS project is NIAGARA FALLS ALL OVER AGAIN by Elizabeth McCracken. Thanks to the Iowa Center for the Book, NWILS office (along with the other 6 LSAs) now has multiple copies of NIAGARA FALLS that we're happy to lend to any Northwest library sponsoring a book discussion in the coming year. Here's how this should work: NWILS received 21 paperbacks, plus 1 large type and 1 audiotape. We've parceled out the paperbacks into 3 sets of 7 books. On a first-come-first-served basis, we'll ship a set of 7 paperbacks to the requesting library. Once your discussion group has finished, please hold onto the books while we wait to see who's next in line. We're asking each library holding the books to ship them on to the next destination. So rather than have you mail the boxes back to Sioux City for us to turn around and mail them out again, we're asking you to route them amongst each other.Janie will be tracking the list of libraries on the waiting list and she can tell you which library is next in line. (If you need the large type version--or the audiotape version--let Janie know and she'll send those separately) We think this will greatly streamline the process and use everyone's time--and postage--most effectively. Many thanks to the Center for the Book for giving us such a generous supply! And we hope you'll remember NWILS as a source from which to borrow multiple copies.

2) NIAGARA FALLS Over the ICN: As reported in last week's EYE-OPENER, the State Library and the Iowa Center for the Book are sponsoring an ICN information session on January 21, 2004 to help launch NIAGARA FALLS. Scheduled from 7:00--8:30PM, this session is intended to get readers more familiar with the book and to help libraries begin planning their 2004 book discussions. Experts will be on hand to offer book discussion tips, plus you'll be able to see an interview with the author Elizabeth McCracken. (delete local site)  For details of ICN room locations, try this handy map: http://www3.iptv.org/iowa_database/aeamap.cfm
3) & 4) - edited out local data

GATES Computers: A word to the wise
Passing along an experience from one of libraries: do not do Disk Cleanup on the Gates computers. This seems bizarre to me, as disk cleanup is a standard op, but the Gates tech told this library to never do disk cleanup on the machines--they don't ever need it because you don't download anything (well, except when you have the Centurion unlocked, but never mind...) and these machines are different and you just shouldn't ever do it, according to the tech. The library is having to restore everything on the hard drives of both machines.
So...while disk cleanup is not at all an essential maintenance piece, you are apparently better off not doing--on Gates computers, anyway
