CE survey:
We want to offer the continuing education you need.
To help do that, during May, the State Library and Library Service Areas
are partnering to conduct a statewide continuing education needs assessment
(survey)
for directors and staff from all types of libraries. If you are
an Iowa library staff member, we ask you to complete the survey by May 31.
We are conducting this online survey using a company called SurveyMonkey.
It is easy and quick - expect it to take 15 to 20 minutes of your time.
Your individual responses will be kept confidential. There's no need
to gather any information ahead of time - most of the questions just ask
for your opinion. Answer the questions for yourself
as an individual.
When you click on the link below, you will be taken to the start of the
survey. For a few of the questions, you'll be asked to enter information
into a box. For most of the questions, just click on your response.
We are looking forward to your input!

EYE-OPENER: (highly
edited)
Good Morning! For the past 2 weeks, EYE-OPENER has focused on continuing
education issues and policies. Today and next week, we'll look at some
of the many training opportunities out there for library staff and trustees.
1) C.E. Opportunities Abound
2) Storm Lake Friends Group Holds Fundraiser
3) Sioux Rapids "Library of the Month" on Web Junction
1) C.E. Opportunities Abound: To paraphrase Dr. Seuss: from there to
here, from here to there, c.e. training is everywhere! Even today, with all
the high tech available, face-to-face workshops remain the favorite format
for most staff and trustees. And happily it's our favorite format too,
since it's the best opportunity to meet and great you in person. Any
topic is suitable for classroom-style workshops and it's a great chance for
all of you to talk with your colleagues.
(a) - (c) edited out - local programs
(d) "ILA Fall Conference." Probably the most significant educational
event this fall for Northwesterners is the Iowa Library Association's fall
conference. Because this year, the ILA Conference comes to Sioux City,
October 13--15! Following this year's theme, "From River to River:
Libraries Build Communities," we're planning great sessions, along with fun
after-hours events too. From storytelling to technology, from public
relations to puppet skits, there's sure to be something for everyone.
If you'll be in Sioux City on Tuesday night, you're invited on a tour of
the newly restored Orpheum Theater. Wednesday night enjoy THE EMBERS,
a Siouxland dance band, at the newly renovated Martin Ballroom. The
ILA Conference comes to Sioux City about every 6 years, so this is the year
for a great showing from Northwest libraries! Look for the July/August
CATALYST to bring you the preliminary conference program--and expect lots
of conference news in EYE-OPENER.
Next week, we'll look beyond in-person workshops at some of the other c.e.
venues available to you..
2) Storm Lake Friends Group Holds Fundraiser: Friends of Storm Lake
Public Library extend an invitation to a "Literary Luncheon Tea" this Saturday,
May 22, 12:00 noon at the Lake Creek Country Club. The luncheon features
keynote speaker Tom Hegg, the author of "A Cup of Christmas Tea" and "PEEF
the Bear" books. This is a fundraiser for the Storm Lake Friends Group;
tickets are $10.00 for SLPL Friends members and $12.00 for non-members.
Tickets may be purchased at the Storm Lake Public Library and at Abner Bell's
Coffee House and Hoffman's Flower & Candle Shop, both in downtown Storm
Lake. Seating is limited.
Following the luncheon program, Mr. Hegg will be available to sign books.
Copies of the books will be available at the event, as well as at Buena Vista
Stationery in Storm Lake. All proceeds from the "Literary Luncheon
Tea" will be used to support the collections, programs, and services of Storm
Lake Public Library. For more information--and directions to Lake Creek
Country Club--please call SLPL @ 712-732-8026.
3) Sioux Rapids "Library of the Month" on Web Junction: Congratulations
to Martha Landness at Sioux Rapids Public Library. Sioux Rapids P.L.
is featured as the "Library of the Month" for May on Web Junction!
The article is entitled "Canines and Cake Pans" and has lots to say about
the library's many programs and outreach services. Here's a quote:
"...Sioux Rapids, IA has some dog-gone clever ideas for cooking up a successful
small town library. That's why they're our LIBRARY OF THE MONTH for
May..." Read all about it at Web Junction: http://www.webjunction.org
Thanks to Martha for putting a Northwest Iowa library on the map!

CHANGES: None reported.
New LINKS of interest:
"Many information seekers — and sometimes librarians themselves
— abandoned card catalogs and rushed to embrace the reach and simplicity
of full-text search when Altavista, Google, and other search engines burst
onto the scene. But the value of library classification systems and indexing
of content by subjects did not suddenly expire. In fact, developments in
library and information science in the middle of the 20th century show promise
for overcoming the exasperating limitations of full-text search. Among those
innovations, a model for knowledge organization called “faceted classification”
is a quite natural fit for the computerized information environment."

FTC Adopts
Rule That Requires Notice That Spam Contains Sexually-Explicit
Material
"Starting May 19th 2004, spam that contains sexually
oriented material must include the warning “SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT:
” in the subject line or face fines for violations
of federal law. The CAN-SPAM Act, passed by Congress
in 2003, directed the Federal Trade
Commission to adopt a rule requiring a mark or notice
to be included in spam that contains sexually
oriented material."

"Schoolchildren will soon be able to call on help
from librarians over the Internet, whether they are at school or at home.
The National Library [New Zealand] is planning a 12-month
pilot project in conjunction with public libraries which will let online
librarians communicate with students through an Internet browser."

GRANTS:
Building Consulting Grants
The State Library allocates
Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds to provide Iowa libraries
with building consultation. These grants allow librarians to get
professional advice from impartial consultants who provide guidance and
recommendations to library staff, city officials and the community on
the extent and complexity of a building project. The building
consulting grants have been funded by the State Library since fiscal
year 1994. Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded as funds are available.
A library that has received the entire
$2,500 grant is not eligible for another one.

The Iowa Educators Consortium, IEC, is an initiative of the Iowa Area
Education Agencies. The chief administrators of the Iowa AEAs formed the
IEC as an independent, tax-exempt, nonprofit institution supporting the
mission of the Area Education Agencies. The primary function of the IEC
is to provide a voluntary purchasing program for K-12 schools by
bringing all statewide school purchasing programs under one legal
umbrella and one fiscal management group. IEC purchases allow schools to
take advantage of aggressive pricing based on the purchasing volume of
many Iowa schools.
Others purchasing categories from the IEC may also be available to the
institutions listed above. Check the IEC brochure (download from IEC
Home Page) or the IEC website for what clients can purchase from each
category.

The
userid is: state and the password is: library. You may use the same
commitment form although the deadline shows April 16. I have tried
the
trial links and most of them are still active. Use the trial userid
and
password listed by the product information. If the trial does not
work,
check with the product contact and ask for trial information. The
URL
for LearnATest is wrong on the web page. It should have a www in front
so the correct URL is http://www.learningexpresslibrary.com/evaluation.
The 14 digit trial userid code now begins with 99552 -complete with your

listed should work with the digit change for the first five digits.
To order beyond June 30, please check with the product contact for
pricing. Many of these products do have aggressive discounts.
Remember
the Infrastructure money you just received can be used for online
databases. Please share this message about pricing with others in

Just a note - The FirstSearch agreement letters have been mailed and
participants of FirstSearch do have access to SIRSResearcher full-text
through the per-search option. Remember that public libraries receive
100 FREE per-searches a month.

advantage of these discounted products to provide additional services to
your patrons.
